How Many Miracles of Jesus Are in Matthew? – Answered!

how many miracles are in the gospel of Matthew

There is a lot of different information about the number of miracles in the gospels, particularly in the gospel of Matthew; therefore, I wanted to share my findings in this article to give you the best resource I can give you.

In total, there are 27 miracles recorded in the gospel of Matthew. They consist of 18 healings, seven wondrous miracles, four exorcisms, and one passage speaks of Jesus raising the dead. Some of the accounts overlap between the categories and therefore count multiple times.

In the following, I want to give you more details about the miracle accounts in the gospel of Matthew, share why I come up with the number 27, and answer related questions.

How many miracles are in Matthew?

There are a total of 27 miracle accounts recorded in the gospel of Matthew. The number of miracles might vary because it depends on what one would claim as a miracle.

I included all records of Jesus’ divine wonders, even the mass healings.

In the next section, you will see how many miracles I personally assign to four main categories. As mentioned above, I divide the 27 miracles recorded in the gospel of Matthew into 18 healings, 4 exorcisms, 7 wondrous miracles, and 1 raising the dead.

Summed up, they exceed 27 miracle accounts. This is because Matthew describes most exorcisms as healings. Therefore, they overlap in the categories and are counted multiple times.

Just as a side note: It’s interesting to see how healing and deliverance work close together.

For more information, I put together a couple of helpful articles in my research on Jesus’ miracles in the four gospels.

They’ll give you a good overview and might present a helpful resource for your Bible study.

This article is just one of ten or so. I list the most relevant articles here:

What miracles did Jesus perform in the Gospel of Matthew?

I sorted all 27 accounts of Jesus’ miracles in Matthew into four categories: healings, exorcisms, raising the dead, and other wondrous miracles.

Obviously, one could assign more or different groups, but I believe these four give you a good overview.

The accounts are listed out of order but include their Bible reference. If you want to see them all in order, you can use this helpful overview here.

Again, not all accounts speak of a single miracle. Several passages talk about mass healings, even “healing” of demon oppression which I also categorized as exorcisms. It’s clear to see here: there is no healing without casting out a demon and vice versa.

I go into more detail about them in my next section. But I still score every single passage that records healings as only one miracle account.

How many miracles appear in all 4 Gospels?

In all four gospels, there is only one miracle collectively recorded. In Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:30-44, Luke 9:10-17, and John 6:1-15, Jesus multiplies five loaves of bread and two fish, which fed “about five thousand men, besides women and children.”

Even though there’s only one miracle mentioned in all 4 gospels, there are multiple miracle accounts jointly recorded in the synoptic gospels.

I list them in a helpful tabular overview in the next subheading.

Following are the four Bible passages quoted from the NKJV.

Jesus feeds 5,000 plus women and children

Matthew 14:13-21 NKJV:

When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities. And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.” But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” He said, “Bring them here to Me.” Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes. So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained. Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Mark 6:30-44 NKJV:

Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told Him all things, both what they had done and what they had taught. And He said to them, “Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. So they departed to a deserted place in the boat by themselves. But the multitudes saw them departing, and many knew Him and ran there on foot from all the cities. They arrived before them and came together to Him. And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things. When the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, “This is a deserted place, and already the hour is late. Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.” But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to Him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give them something to eat?” But He said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.” Then He commanded them to make them all sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in ranks, in hundreds and in fifties. And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and the two fish He divided among them all. So they all ate and were filled. And they took up twelve baskets full of fragments and of the fish. Now those who had eaten the loaves were about five thousand men.

Luke 9:10-17 NKJV:

And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. Then He took them and went aside privately into a deserted place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. But when the multitudes knew it, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing. When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and country, and lodge and get provisions; for we are in a deserted place here.” But He said to them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people.” For there were about five thousand men. Then He said to His disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of fifty.” And they did so, and made them all sit down. Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude. So they all ate and were filled, and twelve baskets of the leftover fragments were taken up by them.

John 6:1-15 NKJV:

After these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased. And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples. Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do. Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.” One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?” Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.” Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

What was the second miracle Jesus performed?

The second miracle of Jesus is recorded in John 4:46-54. It recounts Jesus healing a nobleman’s son: “So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. (..) Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your son lives.'”

Jesus heals an official’s son at Capernaum (John 4:46-54 NKJV)

“So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.” The nobleman said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies!” Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!” Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household. This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.”
